What to Check After Hitting a Pothole Hard

If anything suggests a tire failure, loose steering, fluid loss, or damaged suspension, don’t continue a normal trip just because the vehicle still moves.

Start safely after the impact

If the pothole hit was severe, reduce speed smoothly and find a safe place to stop. Avoid stopping in a traffic lane or on a narrow shoulder unless the vehicle is disabled. Set the parking brake, turn on your hazard lights when appropriate, and keep clear of traffic. If you’re on a busy road, a roadside assistance call may be safer than inspecting the vehicle beside moving cars.

Before getting underneath anything, make sure the engine is off and the vehicle is parked on firm, level ground. A flashlight is useful, but don’t place any part of your body under a vehicle supported only by a jack. You can inspect from outside without crawling beneath the car. If lifting a vehicle is necessary, use jack stands at the manufacturer-approved support points and follow the owner’s manual.

Confirm the safe inspection setup: Check your owner’s manual for the correct tire-pressure specification and approved jacking points before measuring pressure or lifting the vehicle. Roadside conditions, traffic, and the vehicle’s construction may make a professional inspection the safer choice.

Note what happened while it’s fresh. Record which side hit the pothole, whether the front or rear axle took the impact, your approximate speed, and any new noise or warning light. This information can help a tire shop or mechanic find damage that isn’t visible at first glance.

Inspect the tire carefully

Begin with the tire on the side that struck the pothole, then compare it with the tire on the opposite side. Look at the tread and both sidewalls. A bulge or bubble in the sidewall is a serious warning: it can indicate damaged internal cords, and it isn’t repaired by adding air. Cracks, cuts, exposed cords, or a section of tread that is separating also require prompt attention.

Pay special attention to the inner sidewall. It’s easy to miss because the wheel and suspension block your view, particularly on a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Turn the steering wheel only if there is enough room and it can be done safely; otherwise, use a flashlight or ask a tire professional to inspect the inside.

A tire can lose air immediately, slowly, or not at all after an impact. Check the pressure with a reliable gauge when the tires are cool, and compare the reading with the pressure listed on the driver’s doorjamb label or in the owner’s manual. Don’t use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s normal setting. If the pressure is low, check for a puncture or bead leak rather than assuming the tire only needs inflation.

If the tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light is on, treat it as useful evidence even if the tire looks fine. A flashing light followed by a steady light can indicate a system fault on some vehicles, while a steady light commonly indicates low pressure, but the exact behavior varies. Check the vehicle documentation and measure the pressures rather than relying on the warning light alone.

Look for wheel and rim damage

Inspect the visible rim for a bend, crack, fresh scrape, or missing piece. A bent steel wheel may have a noticeable flattened area around the rim, while an alloy wheel can crack or deform with less obvious visual evidence. Damage near the tire bead can cause a slow air leak even when the tread and sidewall appear intact.

Watch the tire’s bead, where it seals against the wheel. A gap, crushed section, or sign of air escaping is reason to stop driving and have the assembly inspected. You can listen for hissing, but a quiet tire isn’t proof that the seal is sound. Soapy water applied by a professional or a careful pressure check over time can help identify a slow leak.

Look at the wheel fasteners from outside. A missing lug nut or a fastener that appears unusually loose isn't a minor cosmetic issue. Don’t guess at the required tightening force or try to correct it by feel; wheel fasteners need the vehicle’s specified torque and a proper tightening pattern. Have the wheel secured and inspected before driving any farther.

If the vehicle has a temporary spare, remember that its speed, distance, and handling limits are specific to that vehicle and tire. Those limits can change by model, so use the instructions printed on the spare or in the owner’s manual rather than a general rule.

Check for leaks and anything hanging down

Look beneath the vehicle without putting yourself underneath it. Fresh fluid on the pavement, a wet area around a wheel, or fluid on a suspension component deserves attention. Brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, power-steering fluid on some vehicles, and other fluids can come from different locations, so color alone isn’t a dependable diagnosis.

A pothole can also damage a plastic splash shield, underbody panel, exhaust hanger, or wheel-well liner. A panel that is dragging or close to a tire can become a hazard at speed. Don’t pull off a loose part near traffic unless you can do so safely; roadside assistance can secure or remove damaged trim.

The brake area deserves particular caution. If you see a damaged brake hose, fresh fluid, a bent shield rubbing the rotor, or a warning light, don’t continue normal driving. Brake problems can worsen quickly, and an impact can damage parts that aren’t easy to assess from outside the wheel.

Pay attention to steering and suspension changes

With the vehicle stationary, turn the steering wheel gradually through a small range and listen for new clunks, grinding, or knocking. Don’t force the wheel against its stops. Look for a wheel that sits at an unusual angle, appears farther forward or backward in the wheel opening, or no longer matches the position of the wheel on the opposite side.

During a slow, controlled movement in a safe area, notice whether the vehicle pulls, wanders, or requires constant steering correction. A steering wheel that now sits off-center while the vehicle travels straight often points to an alignment change, but pulling can also result from uneven tire pressure, tire damage, a brake problem, or a bent suspension component.

New clunks over small bumps, repeated bouncing, scraping, or a harsh change in ride quality can indicate damage to a shock absorber, strut, spring, control arm, ball joint, tie rod, or related mounting hardware. You don’t need to identify the exact part before seeking help. The important question is whether the vehicle’s directional control and wheel support still feel normal.

A basic bounce test is limited and shouldn't replace an inspection. If you press down on a body corner and the vehicle continues bouncing after release, that may suggest a damping problem, but modern suspension designs and the location of the damage can make this check inconclusive. Avoid placing your hands near moving suspension parts or trying to test looseness by force.

Decide whether you can drive to help

Don't continue driving if a tire has a bulge, exposed cord, serious cut, rapid pressure loss, a visibly cracked wheel, a missing or loose wheel fastener, substantial fluid leakage, or a part that is rubbing the tire. Stop as soon as it is safe if the steering feels loose, the vehicle pulls sharply, braking changes, or a warning light related to braking, stability control, or steering appears.

A very short, slow drive to a nearby tire shop may be reasonable only when the tire holds its specified pressure, the wheel looks intact, there are no leaks or hanging parts, and the vehicle steers and brakes normally. Keep away from highways, heavy loads, and unnecessary distance. If you’re uncertain, roadside assistance is generally a better option than testing the vehicle through normal traffic.

Verify before returning to traffic: Recheck all four tire pressures, confirm that no warning light remains unexplained, and make sure the vehicle tracks, steers, and brakes normally before driving beyond a short route to inspection. If any of those checks fail, arrange a tow instead.

Have alignment and hidden damage checked

Even when the car drives acceptably, a hard impact can alter toe, camber, or other alignment measurements. Alignment problems may not feel dramatic at first, but they can cause the vehicle to pull and wear a tire rapidly. Ask the shop to inspect the tire and wheel before performing an alignment; alignment adjustment won’t fix a bent wheel, damaged tire, or loose suspension joint.

A proper inspection may include checking wheel runout, tire balance, steering and suspension joints, spring and strut mounting points, wheel bearings, brake components, and the underside for impact damage. The technician may also compare the affected side with the opposite side. If a tire was driven while significantly underinflated, mention that, because internal damage may not be visible from the outside.

Take photographs of the tire, wheel, pavement, and any visible damage if you may need to document the incident for roadside assistance, a repair estimate, or an insurance claim. Keep the inspection report and alignment measurements. Whether an insurance claim makes sense depends on your coverage, deductible, local rules, and the likely repair cost, so check your policy rather than assuming pothole damage is covered.

After repairs, monitor the tire pressure for several days and watch for a new vibration, pull, uneven tread wear, or recurring warning light. A wheel can be repaired or replaced depending on its material and damage, but a tire with internal structural damage shouldn't be treated as a cosmetic repair.

The safest approach is to treat a hard pothole strike as a quick inspection event, not merely an inconvenience. Check the tire and wheel first, look for leaks or loose components, assess steering and braking, and arrange professional help when anything feels different or looks questionable. Getting the vehicle checked promptly can prevent a small impact-related problem from becoming a tire failure or a loss of control later.
