How to Check for a Bent Wheel After a Pothole Strike

The important limit is that visual inspection can't measure how far a wheel is bent. If the evidence is unclear, a tire shop or repair facility can check the wheel on a balancing machine or with a runout gauge.
Start with the tire and the driving symptoms
Before looking for a bent wheel, note what changed immediately after the pothole strike. A new vibration through the steering wheel usually points to a problem at the front, while a vibration felt mainly through the seat or floor may come from the rear. That distinction isn't conclusive, but it helps identify where to begin.
Pay attention to whether the symptom appears only at a certain speed, becomes worse as speed rises, or is present even at low speed. A bent wheel commonly causes a repeating vibration, but an out-of-balance wheel, damaged tire, loose wheel, alignment problem, or suspension damage can feel similar. Pulling to one side, a crooked steering wheel, clunking, or a new change in handling deserves more attention than vibration alone.
Inspect the tire sidewall before driving farther. Look for bulges, cuts, exposed cords, deep scrapes, or a section that appears pinched. A bulge often means the internal cords were damaged when the tire was compressed against the pothole or wheel. That type of damage can't be made safe with additional air or balancing.
Also check the tread and the inner sidewall if you can do so safely. The inside of the tire may have contacted the pothole or suspension component even when the outer side looks normal. Compare the tire’s pressure with the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure, not the maximum pressure molded into the sidewall. A pressure that drops again after filling is an important clue that the tire bead, valve, or wheel may be leaking.
Decide whether the car should move — If the tire is losing air, has a bulge or exposed cord, the wheel is visibly cracked, or the vehicle handles abnormally, use the spare or arrange a tow instead of driving to test the problem at speed.
Inspect the wheel while it is mounted
Park on a firm, level surface and turn the steering wheel to expose the front wheel as much as possible. For a rear wheel, you may need to look through the spokes or use a flashlight. Keep your hands away from the tire and wheel if the vehicle isn't securely supported, and never place any part of your body under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Start at the outer rim lip, which is the edge nearest you. Look for a flattened section, a sharp change in the circular profile, a dent on one side, or a section that appears pushed inward. A bent lip may be easier to see by comparing the damaged wheel with the opposite wheel on the same axle.
Examine the spokes and the area around their attachment to the rim. On an alloy wheel, look for cracks, branching marks, or fresh bright metal where the finish has broken away. A crack may be small and difficult to see beneath dirt, so clean the suspected area gently before inspecting it. Don't assume that a wheel is safe because it isn't leaking.
Steel wheels often show a more obvious crease or flattened rim edge. They can sometimes be straightened by a qualified wheel professional, but that doesn't make every bent steel wheel a good repair candidate. Alloy wheels may crack instead of simply bending, and a repaired appearance doesn't by itself confirm that the wheel is structurally sound.
Look at the wheel from several angles. A bent section may be visible from the front but hidden from the side, or vice versa. If the wheel is dirty, road salt and brake dust can disguise a fresh impact mark. Clean it with normal wheel-cleaning methods and avoid striking or prying on the rim to expose the damage.
Check the bead and rim-flange area
The tire bead is the reinforced inner edge of the tire that seals against the wheel. The rim flange is the wheel’s outer lip that helps retain the tire. A pothole can deform the flange or disturb the bead seal, producing a slow leak even when the tread and sidewall look intact.
Look for a section where the tire doesn't sit evenly against the wheel. The molded line on the tire sidewall, located just above the rim, should usually appear at a consistent distance from the rim around the circumference. If that line moves noticeably closer to or farther from the rim in one area, the tire may not be seated normally or the wheel may be deformed.
A visible gap between the tire bead and rim, fresh scraping on the flange, or a flattened rim edge is a strong reason to stop using the wheel until it has been inspected. A leak that appears only after the pothole strike is also meaningful, particularly if it continues after the tire has been reinflated.
You can use soapy water around the bead and valve area to look for growing bubbles. This can help identify an air leak, but it won't tell you whether the wheel is bent enough to require replacement. Avoid using a flammable product near brakes, and don't remove the tire from the wheel unless you have the correct equipment and training.
Watch for wobble, but don’t treat it as a measurement
If the tire is properly inflated and the wheel is safely mounted, you can have an assistant rotate it slowly while you watch from a safe position. Look at the rim edge and the molded line on the tire. A side-to-side movement suggests lateral runout; an up-and-down movement suggests radial runout.
This simple observation can reveal a severe bend, but it isn't a precise test. Tire tread can have its own irregularities, and the wheel may appear to move because of dirt between the hub and wheel or because the tire isn't seated evenly. Don't put your fingers near the rotating wheel, and don't run the vehicle in gear with the car raised just to observe it.
If the wheel visibly wobbles, stop there rather than trying to correct it with a hammer. Striking the rim can create cracks, damage the finish, disturb the tire bead, or alter the wheel in a way that is harder to evaluate. A professional can remove the tire if needed and measure the wheel separately from the tire.
Understand what balancing symptoms can—and can’t—tell you
A pothole can knock off a wheel weight or change the shape of the wheel and tire assembly. An imbalance often produces a rhythmic vibration at a particular road speed. It may be most noticeable through the steering wheel for a front wheel and through the seat for a rear wheel, although vehicle design affects how the vibration feels.
A wheel that needs balancing doesn't necessarily have a bent rim. Similarly, adding wheel weights may reduce a vibration without correcting a damaged wheel or tire. If the wheel requires an unusual amount of weight, the technician sees excessive imbalance, or the vibration returns soon after balancing, ask for the wheel and tire to be checked for runout and damage rather than accepting balancing as the complete diagnosis.
Alignment symptoms point in a different direction. A vehicle that pulls, has a steering wheel that is no longer centered, or shows uneven tire wear may have suffered suspension or steering damage along with—or instead of—a bent wheel. Don't use an alignment adjustment to hide a bent component. The underlying parts should be inspected first.
When professional measurement is the right choice
Professional measurement is appropriate when the wheel has a visible dent, the tire loses pressure, the vehicle vibrates after the impact, or you can't tell whether the movement comes from the tire or wheel. It is also sensible when the wheel looks fine but the vehicle’s behavior changed after the strike.
A shop can inspect the tire bead, remove the tire when necessary, and measure radial and lateral runout. The wheel can be checked on a balancing machine or against the equipment manufacturer’s specifications. Ask the technician to identify whether the problem is the wheel, tire, hub, or another rotating component. That explanation is more useful than simply hearing that the assembly “needs balancing.”
The decision to repair or replace depends on the wheel’s material, damage location, amount of deformation, cracks, corrosion, and the repairer’s equipment and standards. A small bend in a repairable area may be serviceable in some cases, while a cracked wheel, damage near a spoke or mounting surface, or a wheel that can't be returned to specification generally calls for replacement. The correct limit is the wheel manufacturer’s or qualified repair facility’s standard, not how straight the wheel looks afterward.
Never try to straighten a wheel with a sledgehammer, heat, a vise, or improvised leverage. Even if the rim becomes round visually, its metal may be weakened or its mounting surface may no longer run true. Tire removal and inflation also involve stored energy, so leave bead-breaking and high-pressure reseating to someone with the proper equipment.
A sensible post-pothole sequence
First, check the tire pressure and inspect the visible sidewall, tread, rim lip, spokes, and bead area. Compare the affected wheel with the opposite wheel, and note any new vibration, pulling, noise, or pressure loss. If everything appears normal and the car drives normally, continue monitoring the pressure and symptoms rather than assuming the wheel is perfectly measured.
If you find a crack, bulge, significant dent, continuing leak, obvious wobble, or changed handling, avoid normal-speed driving and arrange an inspection. When the only clue is a vibration, have the tire and wheel checked together, including balance and runout. That approach avoids replacing a good wheel when the tire or balance is the real problem, while also reducing the chance that a bent wheel gets dismissed as a minor imbalance.
A careful home inspection can identify warning signs and help you describe the problem, but it can't certify a wheel. When the rim shape, bead seal, or driving behavior is questionable, professional measurement is the practical next step.
