Confirm that the sound is an exhaust leak
A leak commonly produces a ticking, hissing, or popping sound, especially during a cold start or when you briefly raise engine speed. You might also see black soot around a joint or crack. A damaged exhaust hanger can create rattling without a gas leak, while a loose heat shield may buzz against the pipe and imitate an exhaust problem.
Start with the vehicle parked outdoors, the engine off, and the exhaust completely cool. Look along the visible piping from the exhaust manifold area toward the tailpipe.
