Think about the complete sequence: where the jack will contact the car, where the stand will go, and how much clearance the repair needs. If you’re lifting one end of the car, the approved stand location may be farther from the jack than you expect. A jack with a little more useful reach and lift may be more valuable than one with a higher capacity rating but a short frame.
Never use a floor jack as the only support while working underneath a vehicle. Decide what kind of jack suits your garage
A compact low-profile jack is often convenient for a low car, especially when storage space is limited. Aluminum construction can reduce weight, while steel generally adds mass and may offer a more substantial feel. These material choices affect portability, price, and durability, but neither one removes the need to check the working dimensions and rating.
A low-entry jack with a quick-lift feature can save time when the saddle starts far below the car. The feature is useful only if the jack still rolls smoothly into position and the saddle remains aligned with the lifting point. A rapid lifting mechanism doesn't make an unstable floor or an incorrect contact point safe.
Consider the wheels and handle, too. Larger front wheels may roll more easily across minor floor imperfections, while swiveling rear casters help with positioning. A long handle can provide better leverage but may be difficult to use in a narrow bay. Some handles fold or lock for storage; check whether that feature actually reduces the space needed.
If you only need to raise one vehicle occasionally, a lighter jack that you can position accurately may be the best fit. If you regularly work on multiple vehicles, a wider height range and a more robust frame may justify extra weight and cost. The right choice depends on the lowest car and the tightest workspace you expect to service.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is shopping by capacity alone. A jack rated for substantially more weight can still have a minimum height that is too tall, a saddle that doesn't fit the car, or a reach that prevents proper placement. Compare the full range of dimensions before considering extra capacity.
Another mistake is measuring the car at the wrong location. Measuring from the floor to the rocker panel doesn't tell you whether the saddle will fit under the approved lifting point. Measure the actual contact point, including any seam, plastic cover, or adapter you intend to use.
It’s also easy to overlook the height of the stands. A jack may raise the vehicle high enough for a wheel to leave the ground but not high enough to place your stands at their approved positions.
