Supporting the wrong area can bend sheet metal, damage components, or leave the vehicle unstable.

You also need to know how high the vehicle must be raised for the job. An oil change may require only enough clearance for access, while removing a wheel, working on brakes, or reaching suspension components may require more. Measure or estimate the distance from the ground to the approved support point when the vehicle is at rest, then consider how much clearance you need for the work—not just for the stand itself.

A stand’s published height range matters because the vehicle must remain stable at the lowest useful setting. Raising a vehicle higher than necessary generally increases the consequences of movement. If the job can be done with the vehicle close to the ground, that is usually the more sensible setup.

Match the load rating carefully

Jack stands are commonly labeled by capacity in tons, but the rating can be presented in ways that are easy to misunderstand. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to determine whether the stated capacity applies to one stand or to a pair. Don't assume that a “two-ton” label means two tons per stand, or that two stands automatically provide a simple combined rating under every condition.

The vehicle’s total weight is only a starting point. When one end is raised, the stands may carry a substantial portion of the vehicle’s weight, and the distribution changes depending on whether the engine, cargo, fuel, or other heavy components are at that end. The jack and stands should have capacity appropriate for the vehicle and the lifting arrangement, with a sensible margin rather than a barely adequate rating.

Use the vehicle’s specifications and the stand maker’s stated rating as reference points. The gross vehicle weight rating is a maximum operating weight and isn't necessarily the exact current weight of your vehicle, but it can help prevent an obviously undersized choice. A smaller car doesn't make capacity the only concern; fit, height, contact area, and surface conditions still matter.

Confirm the capacity label: Before buying, read the stand’s manual or packaging to verify whether the rating is for each stand or for the set, and compare it with your vehicle’s likely supported load. If the rating or testing information is unclear, choose a different product rather than guessing.

Choose a height range that fits the job

Compare both the minimum and maximum height. The minimum height determines whether the stand will fit under the approved support point after the vehicle is lifted. This can be a problem with low cars, vehicles with side skirts, or a jack that can't raise the vehicle far enough without reaching its limit.

The maximum height determines whether the stand can provide the clearance your repair requires. Taller stands may be necessary for some trucks and SUVs, but a tall stand isn't automatically better for a passenger car. If you must extend a stand close to its maximum height, check that its base remains fully planted and that the support saddle is centered on the vehicle’s designated point.

Never place a block, brick, timber offcut, or other improvised spacer on top of a stand to gain height. The support surface, locking mechanism, and base are designed to work together at the stand’s intended settings. Improvised extensions can shift, crush, or eject when the load moves.

If a stand is too tall to fit under the vehicle before lifting, a purpose-designed low-profile lifting method may help, but don't substitute ramps, a second jack, or loose materials as an improvised stand. Understand the locking design

Most adjustable stands use either a ratcheting height mechanism, a pin or through-post, or a combination of features. A ratcheting stand is quick to position because the toothed post engages as it rises. A pinned stand uses a physical pin through aligned holes and can provide a clear visual confirmation that the post is secured. Designs vary, so the manufacturer’s instructions matter more than the label alone.

A ratchet mechanism should be fully engaged, not resting between teeth. After setting the stand, apply only the settling movement allowed by the manufacturer and confirm that the post doesn't slide. Don't use a hammer to force a damaged tooth into place or continue using a stand with bent teeth, distorted holes, a loose pin, or a cracked weld.

With a pinned design, use the correct supplied pin and insert it completely through the post and stand body. Don't replace it with a nail, screwdriver, random bolt, or another object that may not have the required strength or fit. A pin that doesn't lock positively is a reason to remove the stand from service.

The locking mechanism is only one part of the system. The base should sit flat, the saddle should contact the vehicle at the intended support point, and the pair should be set at compatible heights. A strong lock can't compensate for a narrow, tilted, sinking, or poorly positioned base.

Treat the workspace as part of the equipment

A suitable workspace is hard, level, and free of conditions that can let the stands move or sink. A sound concrete floor is generally preferable to loose gravel, dirt, grass, or a sloped driveway. Asphalt can soften in hot weather or deform under concentrated loads, so it requires particular caution rather than automatic approval.

Avoid raising a vehicle where traffic, rain, poor lighting, or a door opening can interfere with the setup. Chock the wheels that remain on the ground with properly sized wheel chocks. Set the transmission in park for an automatic vehicle or in gear for a manual vehicle, and apply the parking brake as appropriate. These measures help limit movement, but they don't replace jack stands or a level surface.

If the floor isn't level, don't try to correct the angle by placing loose boards beneath individual stands. A purpose-made, load-rated surface solution may be appropriate in some work areas, but it must be stable, large enough, and approved for the intended load. When in doubt, move the job to a suitable surface or use a professional facility.

Check the surface before lifting: Walk the intended setup area and look for slope, cracks, soft asphalt, loose debris, oil, water, and anything that could prevent a stand from sitting flat. If you can't create a firm, level contact area for every stand, don't work under the vehicle there.

Set up the stands as a system

Park the vehicle in the final position before lifting. Gather the stands, chocks, jack, and any tools first so you don't need to move the vehicle or search for equipment while it is raised. Consult the manual for the sequence if you are lifting one end or the entire vehicle; some support points and suspension designs make a particular sequence safer or more practical.

Raise the vehicle with a suitable floor jack at the approved lifting point. Position the stands under their approved support points, adjust them to matching heights, and make sure the saddles are centered. Lower the vehicle slowly until its weight is carried by the stands. Don't leave the floor jack as the only support while you work, and don't place any part of your body under the vehicle during positioning.

Once the vehicle is resting on the stands, look at each contact point. The bases should remain flat, the locking parts should be fully engaged, and the stands shouldn't be tilted or visibly loaded at an angle. A careful, controlled stability check from outside the vehicle can reveal a poor setup; don't deliberately shake a vehicle aggressively or crawl underneath to inspect it.

If you are lifting only one end, remember that the vehicle may shift as wheels, brake parts, or suspension components are removed. Removing a wheel changes access but doesn't make an unstable setup acceptable. Keep the jack available as a secondary positioning aid when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, while ensuring it isn't treated as the primary support.

What to do when the setup doesn't work

A common problem is discovering that the stand’s minimum height is too high, its maximum height is too low, or its saddle doesn't match the vehicle’s support point. Lower the vehicle and reassess rather than forcing the stand into place. A different stand size, a compatible jack, or a professional lift may be the right solution.

If the stand begins to sink, tilt, slip, or make an unusual sound, stop the job and move clear of the vehicle. Don't reach under it to reposition the stand. Use the jack only from a safe position and only if you can do so without putting yourself beneath an unsupported vehicle. Damaged stands should be tagged out and replaced, not straightened or repaired casually.

Don't combine stands of different types or capacities under the same vehicle unless the manufacturer specifically permits that arrangement and you can confirm that both support points remain level and compatible. Matching pairs make it easier to maintain equal height and predictable contact.

A sensible buying decision

For most beginner DIYers, a suitable pair has a clearly stated capacity, a height range that fits the vehicle’s approved support points, a positive locking mechanism, and a broad, stable base. The lowest-cost option isn't necessarily the most economical if its markings are unclear, its mechanism is damaged, or its range doesn't fit your vehicle.

Buy equipment for the vehicle and workspace you actually have, not for a hypothetical repair. A low car may need low-clearance stands; a high truck may need greater extension; a driveway may be unsuitable regardless of the stand rating. If you regularly work on different vehicles, choose equipment based on the heaviest and most demanding application only when the height and support points also work for those vehicles.

Before each use, inspect the stand for cracks, bent parts, corrosion that affects structure, damaged teeth or holes, missing hardware, and a saddle or base that no longer sits correctly. Keep the stands clean and use them according to their instructions. When the surface, support point, capacity, or locking action is uncertain, stop and ask an experienced mechanic or use a properly equipped shop.
