How to Check Whether a Tire Is Separating Internally

A smooth-looking tire may be safe, or it may hide serious internal damage; I’ll show you the few warning signs worth checking, what you can safely do next, and why suspected separation calls for prompt professional inspection.

A tire can look acceptable at a glance while its internal belts or carcass have begun to fail. Internal separation occurs when layers inside the tire lose their bond, allowing the tread or sidewall to deform as the tire rotates. It isn’t something you can reliably confirm with a visual check alone, but you can recognize warning signs and avoid driving on a tire that may be unsafe.

The minimalist approach is simple: look for abnormal shape or tread movement, pay attention to new vibration or noise, and arrange an inspection promptly when something doesn’t look or feel right. Don’t try to prove the diagnosis by driving faster or farther.

What internal tire separation means

Modern tires are built from several bonded layers, including the inner liner, body plies, steel belts, and tread. A separation develops when one of those bonded areas begins to come apart. The damage can follow an impact, underinflation, overloading, age-related deterioration, a manufacturing defect, or a combination of conditions. Sometimes there is no obvious event that tells you when it began.

The most visible form affects the tread. A section of tread may lift, bulge, or move independently from the rest of the tire. In more serious cases, the tread can peel away while driving. Separation in the sidewall may produce a bulge or localized distortion, although not every sidewall bulge has the same cause.

A repair shop may use close visual inspection, measurement, rotation on a balancer, and comparison with the other tires to identify an abnormal tire. There is no dependable driveway test that makes an internally damaged tire safe to continue using.

Warning signs you can check safely

A bulge or raised area

Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and look at both sidewalls and the visible tread. A localized bulge, bubble, or raised section is a serious warning sign. It may indicate damaged internal cords or belts, especially if it appeared after a pothole or curb impact.

Don't press on the bulge, puncture it, or attempt to flatten it. Keep your hands away from a damaged area if the tire is severely deformed. A tire with a sidewall bulge generally requires replacement rather than a patch or plug.

Remember that some shapes are normal. The lettering, bead area near the rim, or a shallow indentation where the sidewall flexes may not indicate separation. The important concern is a new, localized distortion that changes as you inspect the tire or is clearly different from the matching tire on the other side of the axle.

Tread that looks or feels uneven

Stand several feet away and sight along the tread while the vehicle is parked. Look for a section that appears higher, lower, wavy, or out of line with the surrounding tread. A separated belt can create a hump or a repeating scalloped pattern.

You can run your hand lightly over the tread only when the tire is cool and there are no exposed cords, cuts, or other obvious hazards. A change from smooth to raised or recessed tread may point to irregular wear, a bent wheel, a suspension problem, or internal tire damage. That check can't distinguish the causes, so it is a reason for inspection rather than a final diagnosis.

Don't jack up the vehicle solely to spin a suspect tire unless you already know how to support the vehicle correctly. A jack by itself isn't a safe support, and getting underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack is especially dangerous.

Rhythmic vibration or thumping

A tire with internal damage may produce a vibration that repeats with road speed. You might feel it through the steering wheel, seat, or floor, or hear a rhythmic thump that becomes more noticeable as speed rises. The vehicle may also feel as if one wheel is slightly out of round.

This symptom isn't unique to separation. Wheel imbalance, a bent rim, uneven tread wear, a loose wheel, a failing suspension component, or a drivetrain problem can cause similar sensations. A vibration that begins suddenly after a pothole or becomes stronger quickly deserves prompt attention regardless of the exact cause.

If the steering wheel shakes heavily, the vehicle pulls, the tire makes a thumping sound, or the vibration is getting worse, reduce speed smoothly and stop in a safe location. Continuing at highway speed to see whether the symptom disappears increases the risk if the tire is failing.

A change in handling or tire pressure

A damaged tire may make the vehicle wander, pull, feel unstable, or respond differently in turns. Tire pressure may also fall if the damage has caused an air leak, though normal pressure doesn't rule out internal separation.

Check pressure with a reliable gauge when the tires are cold, using the pressure listed on the driver-door jamb label or in the owner’s manual. Don't use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s normal target. If a tire is visibly damaged, don’t inflate it beyond the vehicle specification in an attempt to make it look normal.

A tire-pressure warning light is useful but limited. It usually detects a pressure difference, not structural damage. A tire can have a dangerous internal defect while still holding the expected pressure.

Verify the tire’s status before driving farther: Check the vehicle’s tire-pressure label and owner’s manual, then look up the tire identification information through the manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s current recall and safety-information resources. If the tire has a visible bulge, exposed material, severe tread distortion, or a strong new vibration, use roadside assistance or a professional inspection instead of driving to a shop.

A short inspection process

Start by comparing the suspect tire with the tire on the opposite side of the vehicle. Look for differences in sidewall shape, tread height, tread pattern, and overall roundness. Check the inner sidewall if you can do so without moving into traffic or reaching behind a wheel in an unsafe position. Damage is sometimes easier to see on the inside than from the outside.

Next, inspect for related clues: impact marks on the sidewall, cuts, exposed cords, missing tread, cracking, or a bulge near the shoulder. Look at the wheel for a dent or crack as well. A damaged wheel can create a similar wobble and may have caused or accompanied tire damage.

Finally, review what you felt while driving. Note whether the vibration changes with speed, whether it is stronger while braking or turning, and whether it began after an impact. This information helps a technician, but it shouldn’t be used to justify a longer test drive.

What not to do with a suspected separated tire

Don’t patch or plug a bulge, tread hump, or sidewall deformation. Patches and plugs address certain punctures in the repairable tread area; they don’t restore separated internal layers. Avoid using tire sealant as a structural repair, too.

Don’t rotate the tire to another position to make the vibration less noticeable. Moving a damaged tire to the rear may change what you feel without removing the hazard. Don’t carry a heavy load or tow with it, and don’t rely on an emergency spare for longer or faster travel than the vehicle and spare instructions allow.

If the tire has lost pressure, don’t keep driving on it to reach a nearby station. Driving while underinflated can generate heat and damage the sidewalls and internal components. If you must move the vehicle a short distance to get out of immediate danger, do so only as far as necessary and at very low speed; roadside assistance is the safer option.

When replacement is the sensible answer

Internal separation is generally a replacement issue, not a repair issue. A tire professional can confirm whether the tire is out of round, damaged, or otherwise unsuitable for service and can also check the wheel, alignment, suspension, and the other tires for contributing problems.

If only one tire needs replacement, ask how the replacement will match the remaining tires in size, type, tread depth, and wear. On some vehicles—particularly those with all-wheel drive—differences in tire circumference can create mechanical problems or require replacing more than one tire. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance rather than choosing solely by price.

Keep the damaged tire available until the inspection is complete if a defect or road hazard may be involved. Record the tire brand, model, size, identification markings, purchase information, and photographs of the damage. A shop or manufacturer may need those details to evaluate a warranty, recall, or other claim. Policies and recall information can change, so confirm them through current manufacturer or government resources.

The practical bottom line

You can screen for likely trouble without special equipment: inspect for bulges and tread distortion, compare the tire with its mate, check pressure correctly, and take new vibration or thumping seriously. Those steps can tell you when to stop treating the issue as a routine balance or alignment concern.

You can’t safely certify a tire as sound from the driveway once internal separation is suspected. Stop unnecessary driving, arrange a professional inspection, and replace the tire if its structure is compromised. The few minutes spent checking the tire are useful; the risky part is continuing to drive in search of a more certain symptom.
