How to Check Tire Age When Tread Still Looks Good
I'll show you how to find a tire’s date code, interpret its week and year, and avoid relying on healthy-looking tread when age, storage, or sidewall damage makes replacement the safer choice.
Good tread can make an old tire look trustworthy. The grooves may still meet your usual visual expectations while the rubber has aged from heat, sunlight, ozone, and time. That matters most on vehicles driven only occasionally, because low mileage doesn't necessarily mean low tire age.
Checking a tire’s age takes only a few minutes once you know where to look. You’ll need to find the tire identification marking, read its date code, compare the result with the tire’s condition, and then check the tire maker’s guidance before deciding whether it should remain in service.
Find the date code on the sidewall
Look for a marking that begins with DOT on tires intended for the United States. The complete tire identification number, or TIN, can include letters and numbers identifying the plant, size, and other manufacturing information. The part you need is the final group of four digits.
That four-digit group usually appears inside a slightly rounded or outlined area near the end of the TIN. It may not be directly beside the word DOT, so follow the full string until you reach the last four digits. You may need to clean mud, brake dust, or tire dressing from the sidewall to make the marking readable.
The full date code is often printed on only one side of the tire. If you can see a DOT marking but no four-digit date at the visible side, inspect the opposite sidewall. Turn the steering wheel to create more room for the front tires, but don’t put yourself under a vehicle or reach into an unsafe area to read a marking. For a tire on a trailer, spare-wheel carrier, or vehicle with limited access, use a flashlight and take a close photograph rather than forcing the wheel into an awkward position.
Tires sold in other regions may use different identification or labeling conventions. If there is no recognizable four-digit code, record the complete sidewall marking and ask the tire manufacturer, an authorized tire dealer, or the vehicle manufacturer how that tire’s production date is represented.
Interpret the four digits
The first two digits identify the production week, and the last two identify the production year. For example:
- 1823 means the tire was made during the 18th week of 2023.
- 4920 means the tire was made during the 49th week of 2020.
- 0124 means the tire was made during the first week of 2024.
The code describes when the tire was manufactured, not when it was installed, sold, or first used. A tire that sat in a warehouse for a year before installation is already one year older than its installation date suggests.
You may encounter tires with a three-digit date code, sometimes accompanied by a small triangle. These indicate older manufacturing formats associated with tires made before the current four-digit system. A three-digit code doesn't give you a dependable modern two-digit year interpretation. If you find one on a tire still being considered for use, treat the age as a serious concern and have a qualified tire professional identify it before driving on it.
Write down each tire’s code rather than checking only one. A vehicle may have tires from different production weeks or years, especially after one tire was replaced following a puncture or damage. The spare can be older than the tires on the road and is easy to overlook.
Confirm the maker’s age guidance: Before keeping an older tire in service, check the current recommendations from that tire’s manufacturer and have a tire professional inspect it. Age limits and inspection intervals can differ by manufacturer, tire type, climate, and storage history.
Why tread depth isn’t enough
Tread depth tells you how much of the designed tread remains. It doesn't tell you whether the rubber, internal materials, and sidewall have retained their original condition. Tire aging can affect flexibility and durability even when the tread blocks still look deep.
Aging is influenced by oxygen, heat, ultraviolet light, ozone, moisture, and mechanical stress. The process is gradual and may not produce an obvious warning at first. A tire can appear acceptable while developing hardening or fine cracks that reduce its margin of safety, particularly during heavy braking, high-speed driving, cornering, or hot-weather operation.
Look beyond the tread grooves when inspecting an older tire. Check the sidewalls and the grooves for:
- Fine cracking that forms a network or follows the sidewall lettering.
- Deep cracks, cuts, bulges, blisters, or areas that appear distorted.
- Exposed cords or fabric.
- Uneven wear that may point to alignment, suspension, inflation, or rotating problems.
- A tread section that is separating from the casing.
- Repeated air loss, vibration, or a new change in handling.
A clean, glossy sidewall isn't evidence of a healthy tire. Tire dressings can hide small cracks, and washing can make rubber look newer than it is. Inspect the tire when it is clean and dry, and use a light from the side to reveal texture changes. Don't press, flex, or handle a damaged area more than necessary.
Consider how the tire was stored
A seldom-driven vehicle may have fewer miles on its tires, but its storage conditions can make a meaningful difference. A car parked outdoors in direct sunlight experiences more ultraviolet exposure than one kept in a shaded garage. High temperatures, nearby electric motors that generate ozone, and contact with petroleum products can also contribute to deterioration.
Long periods of parking can create other problems. The portion of the tire resting on the ground may develop a temporary flat spot, or a tire may lose pressure slowly and carry more load on a weakened sidewall. A temporary vibration after storage doesn't automatically prove that a tire has failed, but a persistent vibration, bulge, or handling change deserves prompt inspection.
A stored spare deserves the same attention as the four tires in use. It may spend years in a trunk, under a vehicle, or in an exterior carrier exposed to heat and weather. Check its date code and condition before relying on it during a puncture. A tire that has never touched the road isn't automatically new in a safety sense.
For future storage, keep tires in a cool, dry, shaded location away from ozone-producing equipment, solvents, fuels, and oils. Avoid storing loose tires where water can collect inside them. If a vehicle must sit for an extended period, keep the tires inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified cold pressure and follow the vehicle and tire maker’s storage instructions rather than improvising with extra pressure.
Decide what the date means for your tires
There is no single visual test that can turn a date code into a safe-or-unsafe answer. Use the code to establish the tire’s age, then combine that information with the manufacturer’s recommendations, the inspection findings, the storage history, and the vehicle’s use.
A relatively young tire with a cut, bulge, exposed cord, or severe irregular wear may need immediate replacement despite having substantial tread. Conversely, an older tire with no obvious damage still deserves a professional inspection rather than automatic approval. Age becomes more important as a tire moves beyond the period covered by the manufacturer’s service guidance.
Replace tires as a matched set on the same axle when practical, but don’t delay replacing a damaged tire simply to create a perfect age match. If only one tire is replaced, ask a tire professional about tread-depth differences, mounting location, and whether the other tire is suitable to remain in service. On vehicles with all-wheel drive, also follow the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements for allowable tire circumference or tread-depth differences.
Don't confuse the date code with the minimum tread indicator. Wear bars molded into the grooves show when tread has reached a replacement threshold, but they don't measure aging. Tire pressure, alignment, balancing, and load rating matter as well; a tire can have adequate tread and the correct date interpretation while still being unsuitable because of damage, incorrect specification, or poor maintenance.
A simple inspection routine
When checking a vehicle that has been driven infrequently, start with all four road tires and the spare. Record the date code, look at both sidewalls where accessible, and inspect the tread surface and grooves. Check inflation with a reliable gauge when the tires are cold, using the pressure listed on the vehicle’s information label or in its owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.
Next, consider what the tires have experienced. Note whether the vehicle was stored outside, exposed to extreme heat, parked for long periods with low pressure, or kept near chemicals or ozone-producing equipment. A maintenance record can help, but the date molded into the tire is more useful than an assumed installation date.
If the code is missing, unreadable, unusually old, or inconsistent with the seller’s description, pause before driving at normal road speeds. A tire shop can usually identify the marking, inspect the casing, and explain whether replacement is appropriate. A professional inspection is especially sensible for high-speed travel, long trips, heavy loads, towing, or tires showing any cracking or deformation.
Checking tire age is a small task with a useful payoff: it prevents tread depth from becoming your only measure of condition. Read the final four digits, inspect the whole tire, include the spare, and treat storage history as part of the tire’s story. When age and condition are uncertain, the cost of an inspection is modest compared with the consequences of trusting a tire that only looks good from a distance.
