Why Does the Heater Smell Sweet for Only a Few Minutes?

What the sweet smell usually means
Most automotive coolant has a noticeable sweet or chemical odor. If that smell comes through the vents, the most likely sources are coolant inside the HVAC housing, a heater-core leak, or coolant that has spilled elsewhere under the hood and is being drawn toward the fresh-air intake.
The heater core is a small radiator inside the dashboard. Engine coolant flows through it, and the blower pushes air across it to warm the cabin. Coolant inside the HVAC case can drain onto the floor, although the absence of wet carpet doesn't rule out a small leak. Notice whether the cabin heater produces steady heat. A low coolant level or air entering the cooling system can make the temperature fluctuate. You may get warm air at one point and cool air later, or hear gurgling behind the dashboard. A dropping coolant level is more significant than the smell by itself. With the engine completely cold, compare the level in the translucent expansion tank with its marked range. If your vehicle uses a radiator cap, check the level only as described in the owner’s manual and only when the engine is cold. Never remove a hot cooling-system cap; pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.

A safe way to narrow down the source
Start by observing when the smell appears. Does it happen only with the fan on, only with heat selected, or even when the climate system is off? A smell that enters only through the vents makes the HVAC area more suspicious. A smell present with the hood open may come from an under-hood leak instead.
With the vehicle parked outdoors, the engine cold, and the ignition off, inspect the reservoir, radiator hoses, thermostat housing, radiator edges, and nearby fittings. Look for wetness, colored deposits, crusty residue, or a level that is below the normal marking. Coolant color isn't a reliable way to identify its chemistry, so don’t choose a replacement fluid based on color alone.
After driving, don't immediately put your hands near hoses, belts, fans, or other engine components. Once the engine has cooled, inspect again for fresh traces. A small leak may leave a clean-looking trail when wet and a powdery or crusty mark after drying. A flashlight can help, but never reach into a running engine bay.

You should also avoid driving if coolant is entering the cabin in noticeable amounts, the windshield repeatedly develops a film that affects visibility, or the odor causes headache, nausea, or throat irritation. If you need to add coolant, do so only with the engine cold and only with the correct product or a temporary fluid specified by the vehicle manufacturer. These products can sometimes provide a temporary solution, but they may also complicate later diagnosis or restrict small passages in parts of the cooling system. The correct response depends on the leak location and the vehicle.
Don't rely only on the dashboard temperature gauge. It may remain normal while a small leak is developing, and some vehicles provide limited warning before the coolant level becomes critically low. Regular cold-level checks and attention to windshield film, damp carpet, and changing heater performance give you earlier clues.
