Can You Mix Different Brands of Power Steering Fluid?

A low power steering reservoir can make a different fluid brand look like an easy substitute. In many cases, the brand on the bottle is less important than the fluid specification, but that doesn’t mean every power steering fluid is interchangeable. The wrong formulation can affect seals, pump operation, steering feel, and leak behavior.

The safest approach is to identify what your vehicle requires before adding anything. If an incorrect top-up has already happened, the right response depends on the fluid types, the amount added, and how far the vehicle has been driven.

Brand is usually less important than specification

Power steering fluid isn't selected simply by matching the name printed on the previous bottle. Different manufacturers sell fluids under different brands, while several products may meet the same vehicle specification. A compatible product from another brand can generally be used when its label explicitly confirms that it meets the requirement for your vehicle.

For example, one vehicle may call for a dedicated power steering fluid, while another may specify automatic transmission fluid (ATF) or a hydraulic fluid such as a particular CHF-type formulation. These products can have different additive packages and viscosity characteristics. “Power steering fluid” on the front label isn't enough by itself.

The word “synthetic” also doesn’t establish compatibility. Synthetic and conventional products can differ in detergents, seal conditioners, viscosity, and friction modifiers. A synthetic fluid that meets the required specification may be suitable, while a different synthetic product without that approval may not be.

What matters most is the vehicle manufacturer’s required fluid type and any specification or approval number listed in the owner’s manual, service information, or reservoir cap. The replacement bottle should clearly identify that it meets or is recommended for that requirement.

Check the specified fluid first: Before opening the bottle, compare the owner’s manual, reservoir cap, and product label. If they don’t clearly agree, pause and confirm the correct fluid through the vehicle manufacturer or a reputable parts professional.

How to identify the fluid your vehicle needs

Start with the owner’s manual. Look under maintenance, fluid capacities, lubrication, or power steering. Some manuals name a brand, but the specification or fluid type is usually more useful than the brand name. If the manual says to use a specific ATF or hydraulic fluid, don’t substitute a generic product just because its label mentions power steering applications.

Next, inspect the power steering reservoir and its cap. A label may state the required fluid, warn against using a particular type, or direct you to the manual. The reservoir itself may not provide enough information, so treat an unlabeled cap as a reason to look elsewhere rather than as permission to use any available fluid.

You can also check the vehicle manufacturer’s official parts or service information using the vehicle identification number (VIN). Parts-store databases can be helpful, but catalog information can occasionally list several possibilities or contain application errors. For an older vehicle, a service manual or a dealer parts department may provide a more reliable answer.

Before adding fluid, confirm that the vehicle actually has hydraulic power steering. Some vehicles use electric power steering and have no power steering fluid reservoir at all. If you can’t find a reservoir, don’t add fluid to another container by assumption. A low or missing reservoir may indicate that you’re looking at a different system, or that the vehicle’s steering assist is electric.

When two brands can be mixed

Different brands can usually be mixed when both products meet the same required specification and are intended for the same type of system. The brand change itself isn't normally the problem. For instance, switching from one manufacturer’s approved fluid to another manufacturer’s approved fluid is different from combining a specified hydraulic fluid with an unrelated ATF or universal product.

Even when the fluids are compatible, mixing brands can make diagnosis less straightforward. If the steering system is already noisy, leaking, or contaminated, adding another product may not solve the underlying problem. It can also make it harder to tell whether a change in color or odor is caused by the fluid or by an existing mechanical issue.

Avoid relying on color as a compatibility test. Red, amber, green, and clear fluids can vary by manufacturer, and color alone doesn't identify the chemistry or specification. Likewise, a label saying “universal” deserves closer examination. Read the applications and approvals on the back rather than assuming that universal means suitable for every power steering system.

If you’re only correcting a small drop in level and the replacement fluid clearly meets the required specification, using another approved brand is generally the practical solution. Add only enough to reach the correct mark, and keep the bottle so you can record what was used.

When mixing is risky

Mixing becomes risky when the products belong to different fluid families or when you can’t verify either product’s specification. Common examples include adding ATF to a system that requires a specialized hydraulic fluid, adding generic power steering fluid to a vehicle that specifies a particular manufacturer-approved formulation, or using a fluid intended for a different hydraulic application.

The consequences aren’t always immediate. The pump may become noisy, the steering may feel unusual, or the fluid may foam. In other cases, incompatible additives can contribute to seal swelling, seal shrinkage, leaks, or premature wear. A system may appear to work normally for a while, which doesn’t prove that the mixture is suitable.

Older vehicles and systems with specialized hydraulic components deserve extra caution. Some fluid reservoirs serve more than one hydraulic function, and the wrong fluid can affect components beyond the steering pump. The vehicle’s manual and service information should take priority over general advice found on a bottle or online forum.

A small amount of an unverified product added to a nearly full reservoir isn't the same situation as filling an empty system with the wrong fluid. The amount and concentration matter, but there is no universal safe percentage for every vehicle. If the product type is unknown, avoid guessing based on quantity alone.

What to do after an incorrect top-up

If you’ve added a small amount of the wrong or unknown fluid, don’t add more to dilute it and continue driving as though the problem is solved. First, identify the fluid that was added and the fluid the vehicle requires. Keep the bottle or take a photograph of its front and specification information. This gives a mechanic useful information if the system needs to be drained and flushed.

Check the reservoir level and look for obvious signs of trouble, including foaming, a burnt smell, unusual discoloration, or fluid pushed out around the cap. Listen for whining or growling from the pump, particularly when turning the steering wheel. New symptoms after the top-up increase the urgency of having the vehicle assessed.

A turkey baster or fluid syringe can remove some fluid from an accessible reservoir, but it won’t remove the fluid trapped in the pump, hoses, steering gear, or cooler. Partial removal may reduce the amount in the reservoir without correcting the mixture throughout the system. Don’t use a household container or tool that could introduce dirt, water, or cleaning chemicals.

If the fluid types are clearly incompatible, the safer remedy is usually a proper drain-and-flush procedure using the correct product. The exact method varies by vehicle. Some systems can be flushed through the return hose; others require a specific service procedure to avoid running the pump dry or introducing air. If you’re not certain how to isolate the system and maintain the fluid level, this is a sensible job for a qualified mechanic.

Avoid holding the steering wheel against its full-lock position while testing the system. Hydraulic pressure can rise sharply at full lock, increasing noise and strain. If the steering becomes difficult, the pump is loud, fluid is leaking, or the reservoir empties quickly, stop operating the vehicle and arrange professional assistance rather than repeatedly turning the wheel to test it.

Confirm the recovery plan: If the wrong fluid went into the system, tell the mechanic exactly what was added, approximately how much, and whether the vehicle was driven afterward. Ask whether the system needs a complete flush rather than relying on reservoir suction alone.

Don’t overlook the reason the level is low

Power steering fluid generally shouldn’t need frequent topping up. If the level has fallen, inspect the area around the reservoir, hoses, pump, steering gear, and any cooler lines for wetness or residue. A leak may be slow enough to leave only a damp film, especially after fluid collects on a component or undertray.

A low level can allow air into the system, producing whining, bubbles, or inconsistent steering assistance. Simply adding fluid may temporarily quiet the pump while leaving the leak to worsen. Check the level on the correct surface and under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, since some reservoirs have separate cold and hot marks.

Use a clean funnel and add fluid gradually. Overfilling can cause fluid to escape as it warms or as the reservoir contents move, creating a mess that can be mistaken for a new leak. Wipe spilled fluid from surrounding components and follow the vehicle’s instructions for checking or bleeding air from the system.

A sensible decision when choosing between brands

If the manual specifies a fluid type and the alternate brand explicitly meets that same requirement, the brand difference alone is usually not a reason to avoid it. If the label only says “for power steering” without identifying compatibility, choose a product with clearer application information or verify it before use.

When the required fluid is unavailable, waiting is often better than making an unverified substitution—particularly if the reservoir is only slightly below its mark and the system isn’t showing steering difficulty or a rapid leak. If the level is dangerously low or the pump is noisy, don’t continue driving just to obtain fluid. Have the correct product brought to the vehicle or arrange an inspection.

The key distinction is between a different brand that meets the same specification and a different fluid that merely appears similar. Confirm the requirement, add only the correct product, and treat an unexplained low level as a possible leak rather than routine consumption. If the wrong fluid has already been added, accurate information and a proper flush are more useful than trying to dilute the mixture or hoping the symptoms disappear.
